  • The shifts in demographics and the workplace have changed the traditional "school-to-work-to-retirement" model.

  • People are returning to school at different points in their career. The knowledge that people need to be successful at work constantly changes and people find themselves changing careers more often.

  • Because the student population is increasingly different, education is no longer "one size fits all."

  • Certificates allow for broader participation by decreasing the financial burden and time obligation to complete. "Accelerated, accessible, affordable training" (Civic Ventures, 2011)

  • Certificates are specific in nature and can play a role in preparing leaders to face specific challenges.

  • Increasing the access and attainment of leadership education for the number of people needed to serve the community requires multiple educational models or pathways.

  • Universities are responding to this need. W.K. Kellogg Foundation reports, “The survival of higher education will depend on its ability to operate in a mutually influential relationship with communities and society as a whole.”  (Overton, Burkhardt, 1999)
